Are You Actually Using Good Form, or Just Moving the Weight? 👀

Post by RobbieWD »

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Sometimes the weight is going up, but the quality of the reps is going down. 😅
For me, good form isn’t about making every rep look perfect. It’s about staying in control, using the range of motion I’m capable of, and knowing when the weight is becoming too much to handle properly.
I’m curious how everyone else approaches this. Do you record your sets, ask a trainer, use the mirror, or just go by how the movement feels? And which exercise has been the hardest for you to master?

Rows are my biggest one. Once I stopped using momentum and actually focused on moving through my back, I had to lower the weight quite a bit.

Deadlifts humbled me real quick 😂.

I started recording my squat sets a few months ago, and wow... what I thought was a clean squat did not always look that clean on video. 📱 It’s probably the easiest way for me to catch little changes in my technique when I get tired.

I used to automatically add weight whenever I hit my target reps. Now I’m paying more attention to whether those reps actually look and feel consistent. A lighter set with better control can be way more productive than forcing another plate on the bar.

Bench press took me forever to figure out. I was focused almost entirely on pushing heavier until a trainer pointed out that my setup was changing from rep to rep. Getting my feet, upper back, and bar path more consistent made the movement feel completely different.

I don't think every rep needs to look like a textbook demonstration, especially when you're training hard. But there’s definitely a point where the exercise you're doing starts looking like something completely different. That’s usually my sign to stop.

Exactly! I’ve had sets where the first six reps looked great and the last two turned into survival mode. 😅 I’m trying to get better at recognizing that point instead of automatically chasing the number written in my program.

My trainer told me to think about “owning” the weight instead of just moving it. That one phrase changed the way I approach pretty much every exercise.

For me, slowing down the lowering portion made the biggest difference. I wasn't intentionally doing super-slow reps; I just stopped dropping the weight and started controlling it.
