Power rack recommendations - what should I look for without overspending?

Post by GearGuru »

Ready to buy a power rack as the centrepiece of my garage gym. There's a huge range in price and I can't tell what's worth paying for. What features actually matter and where can I save? Don't want to over- or under-spend.

Prioritise the things that matter for safety and longevity:
  • Sturdy gauge steel (11 or 12 gauge) and a solid footprint
  • Reliable safeties (pins or straps) - this is what lets you train alone
  • Westside hole spacing through the bench/press range for fine-tuning
  • A pull-up bar up top (most have one)

You can skip fancy attachments at first and add them later.

Westside spacing - hadn't heard the term, that's useful.

It's just tighter hole spacing in the working zone so you can set safeties and J-hooks at the exact height. Makes a real difference for bench and press.

Make sure it's tall enough for your overhead press and pull-ups with your ceiling, and bolt it down or get one heavy/wide enough to be stable. A wobbly rack is a scary rack. Measure your garage height before buying.

Don't overpay for a commercial-grade beast if you're a solo home lifter - a solid mid-range rack with good safeties will outlast you. Put the saved money toward a quality bar and more plates instead. Safeties and stability are the non-negotiables.

Solid steel, good safeties, Westside spacing, fits my ceiling, bolted down. Mid-range is fine. That's exactly the buying checklist I needed, cheers.
