5/3/1 vs simple linear progression for an early intermediate - which would you pick?
Newbie linear gains are slowing - still adding weight most weeks but it's getting hard. Should I switch to 5/3/1 now or ride linear progression until it fully stalls? Don't want to leave gains on the table by switching too early.

Ride linear progression until it genuinely stops, not when it just gets hard. Adding weight every week is the fastest progression there is - don't abandon it while it's still working just because it requires effort.

Fair, it IS still working, just not as easy as month one.

That's normal and good. Squeeze every last week out of it. Switch to a percentage-based program like 5/3/1 only when you genuinely stall for 2-3 weeks despite good recovery.

When you do switch, 5/3/1 is great for early intermediates because:
But it progresses slower than linear by design - which is exactly why you don't switch until linear is dead.
- It forces you to start lighter and build (saves you from stalling instantly)
- Slow, sustainable monthly progression
- Built-in deloads so you don't burn out
- Simple to run and hard to mess up
But it progresses slower than linear by design - which is exactly why you don't switch until linear is dead.

This is the right sequence. Beginners should milk linear gains fully, then move to a structured intermediate program. Switching early just trades fast progress for slow progress prematurely.

I switched to 5/3/1 too early out of boredom and actually progressed slower for a few months. Wish I'd kept adding weight while I still could. Learn from my impatience.

That's exactly what I was about to do - switch out of boredom.

Boredom is not a stall. Add some accessory variety to stay engaged but keep the linear progression on the main lifts until it truly dies.

Also consider a small step: when weekly jumps stall, try adding weight every 2 weeks instead, or micro-loading with small plates. That can extend linear gains for months before you need a whole new system.
