Is push/pull/legs still the best split for natural lifters in 2026?
PPL gets recommended to everyone but I keep seeing people argue naturals can't recover from 6 days a week. Running it 6x right now and wondering if I'd grow more on something with more rest. What's your experience as a natural?

Frequency isn't the problem, your total weekly volume and recovery is. PPL 6x only works if you autoregulate - some days you go hard, some you back off. People run all 6 days balls to the wall and burn out, then blame the split.

Ran PPL 6x for a year as a natural and grew fine. The trick was keeping most sets 1-2 reps shy of failure. You can't train to failure six days a week and recover without drugs.

That might be my issue, I'm grinding most sets to failure.

There it is. Leave reps in the tank on everything except the last set of an exercise and you'll recover way better on the same split.

Honestly for most naturals a PPL run 5x (so each muscle ~1.7x/week) or a 4-day upper/lower hits the sweet spot of frequency and recovery. 6x is fine but it's not magic - the split matters less than:
Pick the one you'll actually stick to.
- Total hard sets per muscle per week
- Proximity to failure
- Sleep and food
- Consistency over months
Pick the one you'll actually stick to.

This. The 'best split' is the one that lets you progressively overload week to week while recovering. For a natural with a job and a life, 4-5 days usually beats 6 because life doesn't derail it.

That's a fair point, the 6th day is usually when I'm fried and skipping anyway.

If you're skipping the 6th day regularly then you're effectively running a 5-day split with extra guilt. Just program 5 properly and own it.

Mind-muscle and effort quality drop hard when you're chronically under-recovered too. Three great sessions beat six junk ones. I'd pull back to 4-5, sleep more, and watch the lifts move again.
