Chasing PRs While Cutting - Smart Move or Spinning Wheels?

Post by Jett-Muscle »

I’m in a deficit trying to lean out, but I still wanna see the bar weight move. Is it actually realistic to hit new numbers while dropping body fat or is the smarter play just holding strength steady until calories come back up? Curious how you guys handle heavy training during a cut. 💪

If you’re not brand new, don’t expect crazy PRs in a deficit. Holding your numbers while getting lean is a win.

I’ve hit small PRs while cutting but it was more technique dial-in than actual new muscle. Strength gains slow way down once calories drop.

Depends how aggressive the cut is. Slight deficit? You can probably push progression. Deep cut? You’re just trying to survive leg day without seeing stars.

Sleep and stress matter more than ever when you’re cutting. If recovery tanks, so do your numbers. I keep intensity high but volume a bit lower.

Best approach I’ve found is pick ONE lift to push and maintain the rest. Trying to PR everything in a deficit is asking for burnout.

That makes sense. I might just focus on keeping my squat steady and not stress about adding plates every week. Staying strong while leaning out would still be a solid win.

Also depends on body fat level. If you’re starting higher, you’ve got more fuel to work with and can sometimes recomposition. If you’re already lean, yeah… good luck chasing PRs.

Appreciate the input boys. Sounds like the move is manage expectations, keep intensity up, and treat maintenance as progress. I’ll stop trying to ego-lift in a deficit and just focus on clean reps and recovery.
