What’s Your Favorite Way to Stay Active Outside the Gym? 🏃♂️
Lifting is a huge part of my routine, but lately I’ve been trying to stay active outside the gym too. It doesn’t always have to mean another hard workout. Walking, hiking, biking, pickup sports, swimming, or simply spending more time on your feet can add a lot of movement without making recovery a headache.
I’ve also noticed that being active outside the gym helps me feel better mentally. There’s something nice about getting away from the racks and machines and doing something that doesn’t involve counting reps.
For everyone who trains regularly, what’s your favorite way to stay active when you’re not in the gym?

Hiking is probably my favorite way to stay active outside the gym. I can spend half a day on a trail, get plenty of steps and elevation, and still feel like I actually enjoyed my day instead of forcing myself through another cardio session.
It’s also a nice change of pace after spending most of the week training indoors.

I’m all about long walks after dinner. They’re easy to recover from and give me a chance to clear my head after work.

Recreational sports are huge for me because they make staying active feel effortless. I’ll play basketball, volleyball, or flag football with friends and end up moving for hours without thinking about steps or cardio. The competitive side definitely makes it more fun too, especially when everyone starts talking trash.

Cycling has been my go-to lately. A relaxed ride gets me outside without wrecking my legs for the next lifting day.

I’ve actually started doing the same thing with walking. On rest days, I’ll take a longer route around my neighborhood instead of sitting around the house all evening. It’s nothing intense, but I feel less stiff and more refreshed afterward, which has been a nice bonus for recovery.

Honestly, yard work gets overlooked as a legit way to stay active. I can spend a Saturday mowing, trimming, hauling bags, cleaning up branches, and moving stuff around, and by the end of it I’ve definitely put in some work. It doesn’t feel like exercise because there’s an actual job getting done, which makes it much easier for me to stay consistent.
