There’s really no one-size-fits-all answer. Training alone can build discipline because you have to show up and get the work done even when nobody is watching. A good gym crew, though, can keep you accountable when motivation is low and make heavy squat, bench, or deadlift days feel a little less intimidating. At the end of the day, the best setup is the one that keeps you consistently showing up and progressing.

Some lifters love the freedom of training solo—you can put your headphones on, follow your program, and stay locked in without waiting on anyone else. Others swear by having a solid gym crew around because the extra push, spot when needed, and friendly competition can make those tough sessions way more enjoyable.

I like training alone because I can move at my own pace and stay completely focused on my program without having to coordinate with anyone else.

But having a good crew definitely makes heavy days more fun.

My gym friends keep me accountable in a way that an app never could. If I say I’m hitting legs at 6 AM, somebody is actually texting me at 5:45 asking where I’m at.

Solo for me, especially on deadlift days. I need my music, my setup, and zero distractions.

I’ve done both, and honestly, having a couple reliable training partners has helped me stay consistent. It’s not even about getting hyped every workout—sometimes just knowing someone expects you to show up is enough.

A solid gym crew is hard to beat.

I prefer a mix. I’ll do most of my regular sessions alone, but when I’m working toward a heavy PR, I definitely like having people around who know how to spot and can give honest feedback on my form.

Training alone builds discipline, but training with the right people builds energy.
