What’s Actually Moving Your Numbers Up in 2026: More Volume, More Intensity, or Better Recovery? 🏋️♂️🔥

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. It feels like there are so many different approaches to getting stronger now.
Some lifters swear by more volume, others live for heavy top sets, while plenty of people are realizing that recovery, sleep, nutrition, and managing fatigue can make just as much difference as what's written in the program.
For those training seriously in the gym or working toward powerlifting goals, what has actually made the biggest difference for you this year?
More volume? More intensity? Better recovery? Better technique? Or just staying consistent?
Would be cool to hear what is actually working for people rather than just what looks good on paper. 👀

For me, it's been adding volume without going overboard. I started doing more controlled back-off sets after my main work, and my squat and bench both started feeling more solid.

Heavy singles have helped me a lot.

I used to think I needed to train harder every single session, but that honestly just left me exhausted. This year I've been using a heavy top set followed by easier volume, and it's been much more sustainable. I can actually come back the next week and perform instead of spending half the workout trying to recover from the previous one. 💪

That's something I've noticed too. I used to judge a workout by whether I hit a PR, but now I'm starting to think a good session is one that contributes to the next session as well.

Bench frequency changed everything for me.

I’m definitely in the recovery camp. Once I started taking sleep and food seriously, my numbers stopped bouncing around so much. I wasn't suddenly stronger overnight, but I became much more consistent, and that eventually turned into better PRs.

Technique.
I added weight much slower, filmed my main lifts, and focused on making every rep look cleaner. My squat especially improved once I stopped treating every heavy set like a max attempt.

Volume for sure. I was barely doing any accessory work because I thought powerlifting meant only doing the Big 3. Adding rows, hamstring work, triceps, and some extra leg work has made me feel way more balanced. My deadlift has benefited the most.
