Setting goals that actually stick - process goals vs outcome goals?
Setting goals that actually stick - process goals vs outcome goals?
I keep setting big outcome goals ('lose 10kg', 'add 20kg to my squat') and losing steam halfway. People talk about 'process goals' instead. What actually works for staying on track long term? My outcome goals keep fizzling.

Process goals win because they're in your control. You can't directly control 'lose 10kg' but you can control 'hit protein and train 4x this week'. Focus on the actions, let the outcomes follow. Hitting daily actions feels like winning even when the scale's slow.

That's a good distinction - I've been staking my motivation on a number I can't directly move day to day.

Exactly, so on slow weeks you feel like a failure even when you did everything right. Score the actions instead and you stay motivated through the plateaus.

Keep the outcome goal as the direction, but set process goals as the steps. 'Add 20kg to squat' is the compass; 'squat twice a week and add weight when I can' is the daily action. You need the destination AND the road.

Make the process goals small and unmissable to build momentum - 'train 3x', 'hit protein 6 days', 'never miss twice'. Stack small wins and the big outcome arrives almost as a byproduct. Consistency compounds.

Outcome as the compass, process goals as the daily actions, kept small and winnable. That's a framework I can actually stick to. Thanks all, this clicked.
