Adjustable dumbbells vs a full dumbbell rack for a small home gym?

Small home gym, limited space and budget. Torn between a pair of adjustable dumbbells and slowly building a rack of fixed ones. For those who've used adjustables long-term, are they worth it or do they get annoying? Space is my main constraint.

For a small space, adjustables win easily - one pair replaces a whole rack and the floor space is night and day. The good ones (dial or selectorised) are quick to change. The only downsides: they're bulkier per dumbbell and you don't want to drop them.

The 'don't drop them' thing worries me a bit for heavy work.

Fair - they're not for slamming. For controlled work they're great. If you're doing heavy destructive sets, fixed hex are tougher, but for most home training adjustables are perfect.

Had adjustables for years in a small flat - zero regrets, the space saving is unreal. Changing weight takes a few seconds. Unless you're routinely dropping heavy dumbbells, they do everything a rack does at a fraction of the footprint.

Budget angle: a good pair of adjustables is cheaper upfront than a full rack of fixed dumbbells covering the same range. For a beginner-to-intermediate home setup it's the obvious value pick. Get the rack later if you ever need it.

Space saving, cost, and quick changes - sounds like the clear call for my setup. Just won't drop them. Thanks all, adjustables it is.
