The mental side of a cut - staying sane when you're hungry and tired

Three weeks into a cut and the physical side is fine but the mental side is wearing me down - constant hunger, low energy, short temper. How do you stay sane and not crack during a long cut? The food I can handle, the headspace is harder.

Volume eating is a mental lifesaver - high-protein, high-fibre, high-volume foods keep you physically full even on low calories. Hunger is half psychological; a huge plate of low-calorie food tricks the brain. Veg, lean protein, lots of it.

I have been eating quite calorie-dense small meals, which probably makes the hunger worse.

That's the trap. Same calories spread into bigger, bulkier meals feels like twice the food. Switch to volume and the hunger eases a lot.

Protect your sleep - a deficit plus poor sleep is a recipe for the short temper and cravings. When I'm cutting I'm stricter about bedtime than ever. Tiredness amplifies hunger and wrecks willpower.

Diet breaks. A few days at maintenance every several weeks resets you mentally and physically - hormones, energy, mood. A cut doesn't have to be one unbroken slog. Planned breaks make the whole thing sustainable.

Reframe the hunger as a sign it's working, not suffering. And keep some non-food rewards and hobbies so your whole life isn't about the diet. When food becomes your only focus, the cut feels unbearable. Stay busy.

Volume food, guard sleep, planned diet breaks, reframe the hunger, stay busy. That's a survival kit. Thank you - the mental side really is the hard part.
