🏠 Compact Home Gym or Full Garage Gym—Which Setup Works Better?

I’ve been seeing more people build home gyms lately, but there seems to be two camps: the minimalist setup with just a rack, bench, adjustable dumbbells, and maybe some bands, or the full garage gym packed with plates, cables, machines, and every piece of equipment you can fit in there. Both setups can get the job done, but they feel totally different depending on your training style.
For me, the big question is how much equipment do you actually need to make consistent progress? A compact setup saves space and keeps things simple, while a full garage gym gives you way more options for bodybuilding, strength work, and accessory exercises. What setup are you running, and do you think the extra equipment is actually worth it? 💪

I’ve got a squat rack, adjustable dumbbells, bench, pull-up bar, and enough plates to handle pretty much everything I train for. It keeps the setup clean without turning my garage into a commercial gym.

Full garage gym for me. Once you start adding a cable stack, specialty bars, machines, and more plates, it’s hard to go back to a minimalist setup. I like being able to switch from heavy compounds to bodybuilding accessories without having to drive anywhere. 🔥

Compact setup wins if you’re disciplined.

I went from a tiny spare-room setup to a garage gym, and honestly the biggest difference is convenience. Having a cable machine and plate-loaded equipment makes my upper-body sessions way more enjoyable, especially when I’m trying to get extra volume in.

I’d take the full garage setup, but only if you actually use the equipment. There’s no point dropping thousands on machines that collect dust while your adjustable dumbbells are doing all the work. My rule now is that every piece of equipment needs to earn its floor space. 😂

That’s exactly what I’ve been thinking. I like the idea of a loaded garage gym, but I don’t want to buy a bunch of stuff just because it looks cool. A solid rack, bench, dumbbells, and cable setup would probably cover most of my training. 💪

Space is the dealbreaker for me.

My compact gym actually makes me more consistent because everything is right there and ready to go. I don’t waste time messing with machines or deciding what exercise to do next—I just hit my main lifts and get the work done.
